> 1: What's the difference between VRAM and DRAM in graphics boards?
VRAM is video DRAM and as a general rule is MUCH faster than DRAM for
graphics applications. It effectively is a dual port DRAM allowing
simultaneous access for graphical input and display output.
> On a related note, can a board with DRAM be upgraded to VRAM?
It depends on the board, but I believe the answer is generally no.
> 2: Is 16 megs of RAM really enough to run LW?
I wouldn't reccommend less than 32MB. 16MB will be rather painful, but
will probably work just fine (with lots of disk thrashing).
> 3: If I get an Alpha system, will I be limited to running only
> Alpha software
You will be able to run both Alpha-NT native software (such as LightWave)
and 16bit windoze apps that don't rely heavily on direct access to the
hardware. When my back is turned, my wife frequently runs things like
Quicken on my Alpha and its just a standard 16bit Windoze app. 32bit apps
like PhotoShop will not run unless an Alpha native port is compiled
by the manufacturer. Contact an Alpha system manufacturer to get the latest
list of ported native apps (its a big list). I know NekoTech has this list
on hand and I'm sure the other vendors do as well.
